This is an interesting take on what are the possibilities being in the midst of the AI wave of “what is” and “what it could be.” Mo Gawdat, a former Google executive brings to light some of the grey areas of our current chasing of the bright shinny known as “Artificial Intelligence” (AI).
Being a technological professional and realist who has prior experience of being directly involved in two major waves technology that is now common place…1. Internet and 2. Internet of Things (IoT). The AI wave is behaving in a total different manner than the two. The increase in capability is a statistical hockey stick representation. It is a very steep climb that is almost incomprehensible on how it has evolved. Good or bad?
Next is the time factor of adaptation, implementation and the disruption it causes in what we once would consider our normal cadence of technology life. Nothing in the past three to four decades of technology has resembled the rate of capability and maturity of a technology like AI. There is the rub that people are recognizing, but just cant put their finger on. It is the acceleration of the capabilities and penetration is beyond what we have ever seen…that is the technology of AI…yep, ever.
Mo Gawdat brings up to outcomes, which are points on this accelerated AI path that we will eventually have to deal with: 1. Augmented intelligence and 2. Mastery of AI - total human replacement.
Augmented intelligence - The quick and dirty definition and use of AI in this context is a tool that humans would use to aid in any task, calculation, planning and or modeling of possibilities. The emphasis is tool that humans would yield without AI getting too far ahead.
Mastery of AI - If you are just a casual reader and come across this term would you think that this would be the “Day of the Machines?“ This phase of evolution of AI is what all of the past Sci-Fi movies that instill fear of what Gawday has termed as…”total human replacement.” A possibility of the AI evolution that it will think faster, plan flawlessly and with the help of robots the ushering of replacing humans…because it makes sense from both the human and the AI perspective. Spooky?
Wrap this all up in a neat bow…think of AI as fire and when man first discovered it. Did they identify the uses that it could be applied to right off the bat? Were they able to start it, control it and extinguish it per their will and purposes? What happened when they were not able to control the intensity of the fire and thereby it because a unyielding force that consumed whatever it came across? I believe this analogy is liken to what our relationship with AI is and might…fire… shall we prepare to hear Arnold Schwarzenegger “Terminator” line of “I’ll be back” in our future?
Watch the interview with Mo Gawdat and hit me up. Love to toss this around for a bit.
